DSHS Annual West-Central Texas Rabies Vaccine Airdrop Begins Friday
What: Texas Department of State Health Services Oral Rabies Vaccination Program airdrop of rabies vaccine to immunize gray fox
When: West-Central Texas project begins at two locations at daybreak Friday, Jan. 11
Where: Kimble County Airport, Junction
Fort Stockton-Pecos County Airport, Fort Stockton
Who: Texas Department of State Health Services assisted by Texas Cooperative Extension Wildlife Services; U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Texas National Guard; U.S. Army Veterinary Laboratory; Dynamic Aviation Group; and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Why: Continue efforts to control Texas Gray Fox variant rabies in West-Central Texas to reduce human exposure to rabies. West-Central Texas program for gray foxes follows completion of airdrop of rabies vaccine to immunize coyotes in South Texas.
How: Some 2.9 million dog food baits containing an oral rabies vaccine will be dropped from specially equipped King Air planes from Dynamic Aviation Group, flying at 500 feet. Baits will be dropped over portions of 35 West-Central Texas counties to immunize gray fox against rabies and reduce the threat of the deadly disease to domestic animals and humans.
Counties: Baits will be air-dropped over portions of the following West-Central Texas counties: Brewster, Coleman, Concho, Crane, Crockett, Ector, Edwards, Gillespie, Irion, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, Llano, Loving, Mason, Maverick, McCulloch, Menard, Midland, Pecos, Reagan, Real, Reeves, Runnels, San Saba, Schleicher, Sutton, Terrell, Tom Green, Upton, Uvalde, Val Verde, Ward, Winkler and Zavala.
